SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ men's basketball team dropped another close game at home on Thursday when they fell to San Diego Christian 85-83 on a jumper with 1.7 seconds to play.
This is the second time this season OUAZ (3-17, 1-10 GSAC) has been defeated on a shot by the opposition in the closing seconds of a home game. Tonight, the Spirit had rallied from 10 down in the second half to tie the game at 83-83 with 28.6 remaining when
Brian Roberts made a pair of free throws.
After a timeout with 8.9 seconds on the clock, San Diego Christian (7-12, 3-7) ran an isolation play for Tristan Angelo who hit a 15-foot jumper from the right angle to put the Hawks in front. OUAZ wasn't able to get a good look following the basket.
It was a tough fate for a Spirit team that shot 50.0 percent from the field with 40 points in the paint. They struggled from beyond the arc at 4 of 17 but were able to overcome that by making 19 of 24 at the foul line.
Marcus Williams led the Spirit with 19 points and nine rebounds. He knocked down a pair of 3-pointers to go with two assists and one steal.
Brian King Jr. added 18 points while
Tanner Riley and
Dimetres Moore scored 17 and 13 points respectively.
San Diego Christian shot 44.4 percent in the game and had a 37-34 rebounding advantage. Each team committed 16 turnovers with the Hawks holding a 15-11 edge in points from those turns.
Angelo led four Hawks in double figures with 26 points.
The Spirit will now get set for a Saturday contest against No. 4 Vanguard. That game tips at 2 p.m. at Willow Canyon High School.
