OUAZ Cruises to 6-1 Home Win

Spirit have now scored 17 goals in past two games

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The high flying offense of the OUAZ men's soccer team was on display again on Thursday night as they cruised to a 6-1 home win over crosstown foe Benedictine University Mesa at Spirit Field.

OUAZ (6-1) was off and running when Samuel George put the Spirit on the board with a shot to the right side of the goal for his seventh goal of the year in the 18th minute. The lead didn't last long as Benedictine Mesa (1-2) answered just 12 minutes later to even the match at 1-1.

The goal allowed seemed to spark the Spirit as they would add a goals from Giovanni Ruelas and Serigne Amar Ndao before halftime to take a 3-1 lead into intermission.

OUAZ wasn't done in the second half as they struck for another three goal. Ruelas added his second of the night in the 65th minute before Miguel Acosta scored on a feed from George in the 78th minute. Victor Varjao would cap the scoring by heading in a corner kick on his first touch of the night less than 30 seconds after entering the game.

Despite the 5-goal margin, OUAZ had just an 18-16 advantage in shot attempts. The difference was the many of the 11 shots on goal from the Red Hawks came from outside the penalty area, while OUAZ was getting their 13 shots on goal in dangerous positions.

George led the Spirit attack with six total shots and five shots on goal. In total, 11 OUAZ players had at least one shot and seven players recorded a point.

Yuri Nascimento has a solid night in goal with a career high eight saves to secure his fourth win of the year.

OUAZ now takes a little time off before returning to action on September 22 when they host Saint Katherine in the second game of a soccer doubleheader. The men's game is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. after the women's game that start at 10 a.m. on Spirit Field.
