SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ women's basketball team continued in their Golden State Athletic Conference play on Saturday with an 82-38 loss against eighth-ranked Westmont College at Willow Canyon High School.
Westmont College (6-2, 2-0) got out to an early lead over the OUAZ Spirit (4-3, 0-2 GSAC) earning a 23 point lead in the first quarter (29-6). In the second the Spirit's offense began to develop, but could not catch the momentum of the Warriors. The Spirit scored nine points to the Warriors 15 as both teams headed into the half.
The third quarter saw a move from OUAZ with
Jorie Mayfield working from the inside and
Bailey Osmer from the free throw line narrowing the Warriors lead to 27. It wouldn't be enough as the Warriors continued to increase their lead in the fourth quarter by 40.
In the game, OUAZ shot 24.5% from the field making 12 field goal attempts and 84.6 percent from the line, sinking 11 of 13 free throw attempts. The Warriors took control of the three-point range for this game, shooting 53 percent. Mayfield of the Spirit led her team with 12 points for the game, three rebounds and three steals. Osmer led her team in rebounds with four for the game.
For the Warriors, Lauren Tsuneishi racked up 20 points to lead the game as the Warriors, as a whole, shot 48.2% from the field and 53.1 percent from the free throw line. The Warriors controlled the boards earning more rebounds and second-chance points.
Conference play will continue Saturday, December 8th for the Spirit when they host cross-town rival Arizona Christian University at 12:00 pm at Willow Canyon High School.
