PHOENIX – The OUAZ women's volleyball team saw its regular season come to an end with a four-set loss at Arizona Christian on Friday night in Golden State Athletic Conference action.
Looking to complete a season sweep of the series with their crosstown rival, OUAZ (16-13, 8-10 GSAC) took the opening set at Fultz Memorial Gymnasium. Arizona Christian (15-9, 11-7) would respond to take the following three sets to win the match 21-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-11.
Jorie Mayfield provided the Spirit with 19 kills and .333 hitting and she became the first player in school history to surpass 400 career kills. Mayfield also recorded three blocks in defeat.
The Spirit hit .154 on the night with 54 kills. Arizona Christian went for 50 kills in hitting .223. The Firestorm added a 10-3 edge in service aces and had a 12.5-8 advantage in blocks to overcome the Spirit's 69-58 lead in digs.
Austin Edwards added 10 kills for OUAZ with
Rachel Kater going for eight kills, 44 assists and 10 digs.
Seleni Bartley led the Spirit with 15 digs.
ACU was led by 15 kills from Jackie Stein.
OUAZ ends its first season in the GSAC with a seventh-place finish. They have qualified for the NCCAA West Region Championship that will be played on Tuesday at Biola University in La Mirada, California. The Spirit will open against Saint Katherine at 12 p.m. MST / 11 a.m. PST with the winner advancing to the championship match at 8 p.m. / 7 p.m. against the winner of Biola and New Hope College.
