Spirit Rally for 35-29 Win at Texas Wesleyan

FORT WORTH, Texas – The OUAZ football team put a wrap on its regular season with an exciting 35-29 win in comeback fashion over Texas Wesleyan on Saturday evening at Farrington Field.
 
OUAZ (6-3, 5-3 SAC) trailed 29-28 with 1:26 to play before going 70 yards on seven plays in just over a minute. They capped the drive with a 21-yard touchdown throw from Austin McCullough to Brandon McLaughlin in the back corner of the end zone for a win.

 
The winning pass was the fifth of the day for McCullough and the third time her had found McLaughlin. The duo had a 61-yard score to opening the scoring in the first quarter, and then hit on a 42-yard lay in the fourth quarter.
 
Texas Wesleyan (2-8, 2-6) took their first lead of the game in the previous drive when Desmond Nisby scored from 1-yard out and then Tyler Pulling was ruled to have crossed the goal line on the ensuing 2-point conversion.
 
OUAZ finished the game with 479 yards of offense and 20 first downs. They were just 3 of 17 on third-down and they allowed four sacks. The Spirit defense had six sacks and 19 tackles-for-loss. Texas Wesleyan ran for 353 yards.
 
MuCullough ended his day with 394 yards passing on a 17 of 42 outing. McLaughlin made nine catches for 207 yards and the three scores. Jeremiah Greylock had six catches for 163 yards and an 87-yard touchdown score on a 3rd-and-17 play.
 
Da'Shawn Holcombe led the OUAZ defense with 13 tackles and he had an interception on the final play of the first half. Maurri DeBerry and Kenneth Steele Jr. had 10 tackles apiece. Steele also accounted for three sacks.
 
The win assures the Spirit an invite to the NCCAA Victory Bowl. The date of the game and opponent will be announced next week.
