SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ men's soccer team responded to its first loss in over a month on Thursday by defeating William Jessup 2-1 on Saturday afternoon on a rain soaked Spirit Field.
OUAZ (10-2-1, 2-1-1 GSAC) wasted little time going in front when
Giovanni Ruelas redirected a cross from
Hazem Sobhy into the goal for a 1-0 lead in the third minute.
The lead didn't last long as William Jessup (6-8, 2-4) drew even in the 14th minute when Derek Vrededburgh scored on a corner kick play.
As the game began to feel like Thursday's contest, the Spirit created an opportunity in the penalty area where a foul was called in the visiting side.
Ricardo Navarro stepped up an converted the ensuing penalty kick for the eventual game-winner.
The shots in the game favored William Jessup 12-11 and they had a 7-6 lead in shots on goal. OUAZ took 13 corner kicks and allowed five.
Mauricio Ochoa and
Samuel George led the Spirit with three shots apiece.
Yuri Nascimento made five saves to earn the win in goal.
Saturday's win moves the Spirit to fifth in the GSAC standings with seven points. They are on the road next week for two games, including Thursday at Vanguard.
