Spirit Finish Redwood Invitational 2-1


SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Ottawa University Arizona men's volleyball team completed day 2 of the Redwood Invitational with a loss to UC-Santa Cruz and a win over Menlo College. Final Scores vs UCSC are 21-25, 18-25, 20-25 (0-3) and final scores vs Menlo College are 22-25, 29-27, 25-20, 25-16 (3-1). With their first competition completed the Spirit hold a 2-1 record.



In the first match of day two of the Redwood Invitational, the Spirit faced the hosting team, UC-Santa Cruz. Game one was a game-long battle for the lead, both teams working to get ahead. Both the Spirit and the Slugs of Santa Cruz earned initial points off of sideouts rather than earned points with hitting and serving errors pervading play. As the game progressed both teams found their rhythm and were able to clean up their play, but the Slugs found the momentum at the end to win the game 25-21.
 
Game two the Slugs came out dominant using their strong offense to jump ahead early. The Spirit were able to hang with them and tie the score at eight points and stay with them until the Slugs made a move at 15 points to win the game 25-16. Game three followed with a battle between both teams, but the Slugs came out victorious winning the game 25-20 and the match with it.
 
The second match of the day the Spirit faced Menlo College, another first-year program. Game one the Menlo Oaks took control early, but the Spirit fought with them for the rest of game to take control. The Oaks found the win with errors from OUAZ to end the game 25-22.
 
Game two, showed the true team in the Spirit taking control of the game early and forcing Menlo into errors. The Spirit kept the lead for the game until point 23, where the Oaks made considerable strides to tie the score and force OUAZ to win in overage points, 29-27.
 
Game three and four continued to prove the resolve of the OUAZ Spirit gaining and holding the lead in both games to win each and the match. Game three ended 25-20, and game four ended with the Spirit dominating 25-16. For the match, the Spirit earned 15 aces to Menlo's four and seven blocks to the Oak's four.
 
Quentin Campbell and Joaquin Santa Cruz both earned spots on the All-Tournament team for their performances for the weekend. Quentin Campbell had 36 kills and 13 aces for the weekend, leading the Spirit against Saint Katherine and UCSC. Joaquin Santa Cruz led his team with 31 digs for the weekend providing a solid foundation for his team's offense. Andrew de'Leon collected 108 assists for the weekend at the setter position.
