SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Ottawa University Arizona baseball team dropped their doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Westmont College by finals of 8-7 and 11-6. The Spirit will look to rebound Sunday at La Sierra University.
With the losses Saturday, OUAZ drops to 0-4 overall on the year. With the victorie, Westmont College improves to a perfect 4-0 on the young season.
Â
"I thought we got better today, especially on the mental side," said OUAZ head baseball coach
Tim Montez. "Our guys competed from start to finish all day long. In the first game,
Miguel Cirino really did a nice job of making pitches attack the zone, and offensively we got some timely hits."
Â
Montez continued, "We had some things that didn't go our way, but we kept answering back all game long. Hopefully our guys continue to learn about themselves and what it means to finish. We get a chance for redemption tomorrow, as we play our third doubleheader in as many days."
Â
In game one Saturday, the Spirit struck first and hung all game long with the Warriors in a back-and-forth affair. OUAZ outhit Westmont College 14 to 7 in the first game and struck first with a run in the top of the first inning on a RBI single by
Greg Saenz; which plated
Hayden Durkiewicz.
Â
Both teams scored a run each in the third-inning, before OUAZ broke-out for two runs in the top of the sixth to take a 4-1 lead. Westmont College would then outscore the Spirit 7-3 in the final four frames, including the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the tenth inning to give the Warriors the 8-7 walk-off win.
Â
Josh Meyer and
Race Traynor each finished with three hits apiece to lead the OUAZ offense in game one, while
Greg Saenz drove in a team high three runs.
Â
Game two was all Westmont. The Warriors scored a run in the first and second innings, to take the early 2-0 lead. Westmont put the game away for good with a seven run fourth-inning; before adding two more runs in the fifth to take the commanding 11-0 lead.
Â
OUAZ responded with a six-run sixth inning, but fell to the Warriors 11-6. In the loss, OUAZ was outhit 13-5, and made four errors to just one for Westmont.
