LANCASTER, Calif. - The Ottawa University Arizona men's soccer team won Saturday afternoon at the University of Antelope Valley by a final score of 2-1 in Lancaster, California.
With the victory, the Spirit improve to 4-5 overall on the season. With the loss, the University of Antelope Valley falls to 2-5-1 overall.
"It's great seeing this team grow every game," said OUAZ head men's soccer coach Matt Gow. "I know I've said that before, however today was the first day where I felt like our guys out-worked our opponent for a full 90 minutes."
Gow continued, "we started 11 freshmen today. Being able to play 18 players and not have the level drop and rise at the moment when we needed it to, was the key in our win today!"
The Spirit got back to their winning ways on Saturday, with a hard-earned road win at the University of Antelope Valley. OUAZ got on the board first in the 24th minute of the match, when Omar Centeno (SO/Los Angeles, CA) found Andric McGill (FR/McPherson, KS) for the game's first goal. OUAZ would hold that lead and go into halftime up 1-0.
In the second half, Omar Centeno got a goal of his own with about 10 minutes remaining in the match to seal the victory for OUAZ. The Spirit held a 2-0 lead, until the Pioneers got on the scoreboard in the final minute of the game. Time would run out on Antelope Valley and OUAZ would claim the 2-1 victory.
In the win, Spirit goaltender Alex Londors (FR/Chelmsford, England) recorded five saves while facing over 12 shots.
OUAZ returns to action on Thursday October 5th, when the Spirit travel to San Marcos, California to face Saint Katherine College at 11am.
