SURPRISE, Ariz. - The Ottawa University Arizona women's basketball team fell late on Monday evening to the Benedictine University at Mesa Redhawks by a final of 66-63 inside of the Willow Canyon High School gym.
In the first quarter Monday, the Redhawks took control; shooting 7-for-15 from the field while the Spirit shot just 4-for-13. The first quarter ended with OUAZ down 16-11. In the second quarter, the Spirit picked up their defense and held the Redhawks to just four made shots. The Spirit put themselves within striking distance at the half ending the quarter at 25-20.
To begin the second half, the Redhawks made a push to move ahead but the Spirit held with them taking the lead twice in the quarter and ending it 44-43. OUAZ dominated at the three-point line, making two of their five attempts to BenU's one missed attempt. In the fourth quarter, both teams worked to take the lead. The Redhawks held the lead until the Spirit tied the game at 63-63 in the final minute of the game. The Redhawks made three free-throws in the last minute of the game to seal the 66-63 victory.
The Spirit shot 36% from the field for the game and dominated from the three-point line, out-shooting the Redhawks 36% to 10%.
OUAZ travels to Santa Clarita, California for the Jersey Mike's Fall Classic to play Hope International University on Nov 17th at 3:00pm (MST).
