AURORA, Colo. - The Ottawa University Arizona men's soccer team defeated the Grace University Royals on Saturday afternoon by a final of 12-1 in a neutral site game in Aurora, Colorado.
With the victory, the Spirit improve to 8-7 overall on the season. With the loss, Grace University falls to 4-11-1 overall.
"I am proud of our performance today," said OUAZ head men's soccer coach Matt Gow. "We continued to implement our style for 90 minutes. Today was nice and I am looking forward to our match tomorrow."
OUAZ jumped on Grace University early and often on Saturday afternoon to the tune of six goals in each half, as the Spirit defeated the Royals 12-1. The Spirit got the scoring started in the eighth minute of the match, when Giovanni Ruelas (FR/Manteca, CA) scored unassisted to put OUAZ ahead at 1-0. The Spirit would never look back. OUAZ would go on to score goals in the 14th, 18th, two in the 33rd minute, and one in the 34th minute of the first half. The Royals responded with a goal in the 36thminute, but by then the damage had already been done. At halftime, OUAZ held a 6-1 lead over the Royals.
In the second half, the Spirit offense continued to attack; to the tune of six more goals. OUAZ scored in the 50th, 58th, 74th, two in the 79thminute and one final goal in the 83rd minute to seal the 12-1 victory.
In the win, the Spirit outshot Grace University 37-1 and attempted 13 corner-kicks, while the Royals didn't have the chance at a single corner-kick.
Offensively, Bryan Hernandez (FR/Phoenix, AZ) finished with a Hat-Trick for the Spirit; while finishing with four shots on goal. Samuel George (FR/Sittingbourne, England) and Giovanni Ruelas both finished with two goals apiece.
In the victory, the Spirit were able to play both of their goaltenders Antony Siaha (SO/Yaounde, Cameroon) and Kaden Jobe (FR/Wichita, KS) each a half.
The OUAZ men close out their trip to Denver, by facing Johnson & Wales University on Sunday afternoon at 1:30pm. Sunday's match will be played in nearby Aurora, Colorado at Gateway High School.
