DENVER, Colo. - The Ottawa University Arizona men's soccer team fell on Sunday afternoon to the Wildcats from Johnson & Wales University by a final of 3-2 in Denver, Colorado.
With the loss, the Spirit drop to 8-8 on the year. With the victory, Johnson & Wales University improves to 6-8-1 on the season.
"That was a tough one today, as it was the most unlucky performance that I have ever seen," said OUAZ head men's soccer coach Matt Gow. "We did a good job of creating multiple opportunities today. Any other day we would've netted at least five goals."
The fireworks began early on Sunday afternoon, as the games' first goal was scored in just the second minute of the match. Kyler Fowkes sent a corner-kick into the box for Johnson & Wales University, as Ben Flannery Bartlett headed it past the Spirit goalkeeper to give the Wildcats the early 1-0 lead. OUAZ responded a minute later, when Hazem Sobhy(FR/Cairo, Egypt) sent a pass into the box and Adam Dumo (FR/Las Vegas, NV) deposited the pass past the Wildcats keeper to even the score at 1-1.
OUAZ would strike once more in the first half, as Omar Centeno(SO/Los Angeles, CA) scored unassisted in the 40th minute to give the Spirit a 2-1 lead headed into halftime.
In the second half, Johnson & Wales evened the score in the 47th minute at 2-2, and then took the lead for good with a goal in the 64th minute to claim the 3-2 victory. The Wildcats were led by Ben Flannery Bartlett, who finished with all three Wildcat goals.
In the loss, OUAZ outshot Johnson & Wales 22-11 and attempted four more corner-kicks than the Wildcats.
"We look forward to getting back home, getting organized and finishing the regular season on Thursday," said Gow.
The OUAZ men close out the regular season this Thursday November 2nd, when the Spirit host Embry-Riddle (AZ) University at 7pm at Spirit Field in Surprise.
