VOLLEYBALL WIN GIVES TEAM FIRST STREAK IN PROGRAM HISTORY

PHOENIX, Ariz. - The Ottawa University Arizona women's volleyball team defeated the SAGU American Indian College Warriors in three sets on Monday evening. Final scores were 25-11, 25-16, and 25-10.

With the win the spirit move on with the record 5-8.

"I was pleased at how well the girls played tonight," said Head Coach Kristin Steele. "We've had some sickness and injuries and had a light week last week (with few matches). We have a big match on Wednesday against ACU and it will be nice to go into that match on a winning streak – the first in program history!"

Coach Steele went on to comment, "we were pleased with the way Jessica Youngberg (JR/Peoria, AZ) played tonight. She had a great match both in setting and hitting roles."

Game one started with the Spirit taking an early lead scoring nine points to the Warriors two. The Warriors were able to come back and narrow the score to 11-7 before OUAZ took off to win the game 25-11 using five service aces to dominate the game. Game two OUAZ gained 10 points to SAGU's three, but faltered after a Warrior timeout to allow SAGU a nine point lead and narrow the score to 15-12. Both teams went back and forth, but the Spirit won the game 25-16. Game three, the Warriors earned the first two points of the game, but OUAZ picked up their energy to take the lead and finish the game and the match 25-10.

Kill leaders for the match were Nicole Newman (FR/Avondale, AZ), Jessica Youngberg and Jorie Mayfield (JR/Tempe, AZ) with six kills each. Jessica Youngberg led with 15 assists and Breelle Lugo(SO/Tempe, AZ) had 12 assists for the match. Olivia Kovacs(JR/Puyallup, WA) had eight digs for the match and Halei Sanders(FR/Peoria, AZ) had two blocks for the night. Jessica Youngberg also led her team with five service aces for the match.

The Spirit play Arizona Christian University, Wednesday October 4th, at Valley Vista High School in Surprise, AZ. Game time starts at 7:00pm.
