Coach Vargas started throwing when she was in middle school, held the shot-put record at Santa Cruz High School and received a scholarship to continue throwing at UC Santa Cruz where she participated at Nationals in the hammer throw. Once settled in Arizona after graduating with her undergraduate degree, she began to coach at Greenway High School with the legendary throws coach, Clyde Volz. She has coached at Hillcrest Middle School, Sandra Day O'Conner High School, St. Mary's Catholic High School and currently private coaches for USATF athletes. This year marks 31 years of coaching throwers and has had two national champions in javelin as well as countless Regional and State Champions in all throwing events. This season is her third year at Ottawa and has already had success with top finishers at the GCAC conference with All-Conference throwers.Â
