Spirit Compete Hard in Pair of Matches at Surprise Tennis Courts

The OUAZ Spirit men's tennis team battled through a pair of tough matchups at the Surprise Tennis Courts, falling to both UC Riverside Highlanders and Arizona Christian Firestorm.

OUAZ 0, UCR 7 (Feb. 24)

In their first matchup, the Spirit were defeated 7–0 by UC Riverside. The Highlanders secured the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. The pairing of Arvid Lindblad and Filip Novacek dropped the No. 1 doubles match 6–3, while Kasper Olofsson and Fabian Wetter fell by the same score at No. 2. At No. 3 doubles, Albin By and Boston McFarland battled but came up short 6–4.

Singles play saw several competitive moments for OUAZ. Filip Novacek pushed his opponent to three sets at No. 2 singles after taking the first set 6–2, but ultimately fell in a tight battle. Fabian Wetter also forced a third set at No. 5 singles before UC Riverside secured the point. Arvid Lindblad opened his No. 1 singles match competitively before his opponent ultimately took the match after Lindblad was forced to retire in the third set.

OUAZ 1, ACU 6 (Feb. 27)

The Spirit returned to the court a few days later to face Arizona Christian. OUAZ found early success in doubles when Arvid Lindblad and Filip Novacek captured the No. 1 doubles match 6–2, giving the Spirit a strong start. However, Arizona Christian responded by winning the remaining two doubles matches to take the doubles point.

In singles play, the Firestorm controlled much of the momentum, winning five of the six matches. OUAZ's lone victory came from Max Lopez-Gonzalez at No. 6 singles, where he delivered a dominant 6–3, 6–0 performance. Fabian Wetter also pushed his match to three sets at No. 5 singles but fell in the deciding frame.

Despite the results, the Spirit showed resilience throughout both contests with several tightly contested matches and multiple three-set battles. OUAZ will look to build on those competitive performances as they continue their spring schedule.
