Mesa, Ariz. — The top-ranked OUAZ Beach Volleyball team continued its perfect start to the season Wednesday, earning two key GSAC conference victories at the Arizona Athletic Grounds. The No. 1 Spirit opened the day with a 5-0 sweep of Life Pacific before securing a strong 4-1 win over No. 7 Hope International to improve to 7-0 overall.
OUAZ dominated its opening dual against the Warriors, claiming all five flights in straight sets. At the top position, Eliana Dean and Maya Blake led the way with a 21-9, 21-12 victory. Shayna Martinez and Railey Dykstra followed with a decisive 21-8, 21-9 win in the No. 2 flight, while Olga Romero and Mariella Ramos captured the third flight 21-17, 21-12. Gabriela Corrales and Shea Marovich controlled the No. 4 pairing with a 21-7, 21-5 result, and Alicia Romero and Katy Shockey completed the sweep with a 21-4, 21-9 win in the fifth flight.
The Spirit then turned their attention to a marquee matchup against No. 7 Hope International and once again showcased their depth. Martinez and Dykstra secured a key straight-set win in the No. 2 flight (21-17, 21-7), while Olga Romero and Shea Marovich handled the No. 3 position 21-7, 21-13. Mariella Ramos and Gabriela Corrales added another straight-set victory at No. 4 (21-18, 21-14) to give OUAZ control of the dual.
The clinching moment came in the No. 1 flight, where Dean and Blake fought back after dropping the opening set to win a dramatic three-set battle, 17-21, 21-19, 16-14, sealing the ranked conference win for the Spirit. Hope International picked up its lone point in the No. 5 flight in a three-set match.
With the two conference victories, the No. 1-ranked Spirit move to 7-0 on the season and will continue GSAC play Thursday at the Arizona Athletic Grounds against La Sierra. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. (MST).
