Surprise, Ariz.- The Spirit soccer team secured their first victory in GSAC play with a hard-fought 1-0 shutout win over Park-Gilbert, who exit the match with a 2-3-3 overall record and 1-2-1 conference mark. This win improves the Spirit's overall season record to 2-4-1 and their GSAC standing to 1-2-1.
The Spirit took an early lead in the 22nd minute when forward Alvaro Hormigos netted his first goal of the season, putting the team on the scoreboard and setting the tone for the remainder of the match. From that moment forward, the Spirit's defense neutralized the Buccaneers' offensive efforts. Goalkeeper Johnathan Garcia played a critical role between the posts, recording two crucial saves and maintaining a steadfast defense that kept the opposition scoreless throughout the contest.
Following this victory, the Spirit will enjoy a brief respite before embarking on their next road trip. On Thursday, October 2nd, they will face Benedictine Mesa in an 8:00 PM (MST) kickoff. The team will then travel to Glendale for a Saturday morning clash against Arizona Christian University (ACU), with the match set to begin at 11:30 AM (MST) on October 4th.
