GREENEVILLE, TENN. – The OUAZ beach volleyball team finished off its amazing season on Saturday, defeating Corban in the National Invitational Semifinal, and battling Vanguard in the Championship. The Spirit lost a very close dual, 3-2, but its amazing athletes were recognized for its efforts all week, and all season, long.
(2) OUAZ 3, (1) Corban 2
The Spirit met up with the top seed Warriors in the semifinal, and took control early. The fours pair of Shea Marovich and Dayana Raygoza won in straight sets, not finishing a set any closer than four points of their opponents.
In the twos, Mattea Wilson and Olivia Andersh won the first set, then took a very tight second set, giving OUAZ the 2-0 lead with a 28-26 final to clinch. The Spirt took the dual thanks to its outstanding ones pair of Summer Hanks and Diana Enriquez, who won in straight sets as well to earn a spot in the championship dual.
(7) Vanguard 3, (2) OUAZ 2
The Spirit got off to the same start as they did in the semifinal, winning in the twos and fours. Marovich and Raygoza needed three sets this time, pushing through a very tough first-set loss to dominate the final two and give OUAZ the 1-0 dual lead.
It was pushed to 2-0 on another three-sets victory, where Wilson and Andersh took a thrilling third set, 15-13. After Vanguard took the ones and threes matches in straight sets, the fives pair of Cheyenne Higgins and Gabriella Corrales battled so hard, but fell in a third set to end the NAIA Beach Volleyball season.
The individual accolades rolled in for the Spirit following the conclusion of the championship. Hanks and Enriquez were named the NAIA Pair of the Year, while those two, as well as Andersh and Wilson were named to the All-Tournament team.
