The excellent OUAZ beach volleyball season got even sweeter news this week. Not only did the Spirit clinch the GSAC Regular Season Championship with a perfect week in Santa Clarita, but the team maintained its top ranking in the most recent coaches' poll.
The Spirit are 9-0 in GSAC play, defeating everyone so far in a competitive conference. This past weekend, OUAZ won four conference matches to take the regular season championship, with four of those with a 3-2 final.
The weekend started against host and seventh-ranked The Master's, where the Spirit took a 3-2 final. OUAZ won the first three points to clinch the matchup with the Mustangs, as Sam Baer and Gabriela Corrales took a convincing two-set win to clinch.
It was up to Baer and Corrales again to clinch another victory, bouncing back from a close opening set in the fives to dominate the final two and earn a team win against #6 Vanguard. Grace Huges/Amanda Carlson (threes) and Shea Marovich/Dayana Raygoza (fours) had straight-set victories against the Lions.
The Spirit would earn its Regular Season Championship with its second matchup on Friday, as they beat Life Pacific 5-0. Summer Hanks and Diana Enriquez put together a hard-fought three-set victory in the ones position against the Warriors, and pairs two-five had straight-set wins.
OUAZ would wrap its weekend up against Hope International, beating the Royals 3-2 to end its regular season trips to California. Baer and Corrales would earn a 5-0 weekend with a straight-sets win, setting up Carlson and Hughes to clinch the win with a 16-14 third-set effort.
The excellent season will continue on at the end of the month when the Spirit visit Arizona Christian. The number one team in the nation will also compete in the GSAC Tournament, taking place in Huntington Beach, Calif. on April 12 and 13.
