Witkowski and Bara account for two of three goals against BenU
As the Imagine Dragons sing in their song "
Thunder", "Lightning then the thunder." That is a good way to describe the soccer match on Monday, August 21st when the Spirit defeated Benedictine University of Mesa 3-0 at Spirit Field.
As the match kicked off, you saw lightning approaching from Downtown Phoenix, you saw it in the Northern Valley and it eventually made it's way to Surprise. Both on and off the pitch.
On the pitch,
Anabella Bara,
Lexy Rowe and
Amanda Witkowski all scored their first goals of the season.
Harlee Kuntz registered her second assist of the season, while GSAC Player of the Week
Mindy Lertzman had the helper on Rowe's goal.
Off the pitch, there was lightning close enough to warrant a delay, just as halftime was about to end, to cause a near-hour delay.
"We played well tonight," head coach Skully Kellar said during the post-game interview. "We also gained experience as a group. After facing some weather adversity."
Defensively, the Spirit has locked it down so far this season. Two games in and they has allowed 12 total shots, five of which have been directed on frame. On the other end, they have 25 shots, 15 on target.
On Thursday, the Spirit will travel to Carlsbad, California to face the University of Saint Katherine. The match is scheduled to begin at noon. OUAZ will be back at Spirit Field for an early morning match against Marian University out of Indiana. The first touch on Labor Day is set for 8:00 a.m.
