Atherton, Calif. - The OUAZ men's basketball team made a valiant effort to complete a comeback against Jessup University on Saturday night, but in the end, fell short 89-87. OUAZ had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer after Keshawn Bruner hit a deep three-pointer with two seconds left. Spirit forward McKay Bundy stole the Warriors inbound pass with one second left but didn't have enough time to get a shot off. The loss drops the Spirit to 18-8 overall and 10-7 in GSAC play. It was just their second loss in the last eight road games.
The game started well for OUAZ as it led by nine (34-25) with 7:00 left in the first half. Jessup took back the lead (44-42) with three seconds to go. The Warriors continued to hold a small lead until Spirit forward Josiah De'laCerda hit a pair of free throws, putting OUAZ up by one (55-54). Over the next 10 minutes, Jessup outscored the Spirit 21-10 to lead 75-65 with 5:37 to play.
Down the stretch Warrior guard Cashemin Williams scored 14 of his game-high 34 points, keeping Jessup in front. De'laCerda did what he could to keep it close in the final 20 minutes, scoring 18 of his 25 points, including three very timely three-pointers. Other Spirit players scoring in double figures included Bruner (15), Alex Villi (14) and Jayce Catchings (13). Devon Collins led the Spirit with 11 rebounds.
OUAZ takes to the floor for its last home game this season when it hosts #2 ranked Arizona Christian next Saturday afternoon (Feb. 18 @2pm MST). There are tickets available for the game, however, it can also be viewed via live stream through the OUAZ website or by downloading the OUAZ app.
