Spirit Advance to GSAC Semifinals with 69-50 Win

FULLERTON, Calif. – Playing in the GSAC Men's Basketball Tournament for the first time in program history, the OUAZ men's basketball team recorded its first tournament with a 69-50 result against Vanguard on Thursday at Darling Pavilion.

OUAZ (21-9) – the tournament's No. 4 seed – never trailed after scoring the game's first seven points. The Spirit used a 12-2 run to open a double-digit lead, and it was 13 with 3:14 to play before halftime when fifth-seeded Vanguard (18-12) closed with seven straight to enter halftime with OUAZ leading 30-24.

Leading by nine midway through the second half, OUAZ outscored the Lions 13-2 during a 5-minute span to put the game out of reach. They held the Lions to just one basket during the burst while forcing four turnovers.

Four Spirit players scored in double figures, with Kam Malbrough leading the way with 15 points. He added a team-best six assists and three steals while grabbing five rebounds. Devin Collins added 14 points and eight rebounds, with Keshawn Bruner going for 10 points and nine boards.

OUAZ shot 40.4 percent with 32 points in the paint. They assisted on 16 of their 23 made baskets with 14 turnovers. Vanguard was held to 36.2 percent with 18 turnovers for 21 Spirit points. OUAZ held a 42-32 edge in rebounds, with 14 offensive rebounds going for 17 points.

Kolten Hitt made three of the Spirit's six 3-pointers to finish with 13 points. Jayce Catchings added seven points and three steals off the bench.

Garrett White led Vanguard with 17 points and six rebounds.

OUAZ advances to the semifinals on Friday at 6 p.m. (AZ), where they will face the Westmont and Arizona Christian winner.
