Spirit Complete Perfect Cactus Classic by Defeating Argos

CHANDLER, Ariz. – Using a dominant first half, the OUAZ men's basketball team cruised to a 99-70 win over Providence (Mont.) on Tuesday morning to complete the Cactus Classic with a perfect 3-0 record.

After the teams traded baskets for the first five-plus minutes, OUAZ (10-4) took control of the game with a 19-3 run to open a 32-17 lead with 9:00 to play in the first half. Providence (6-7) would get within 10 before the Spirit added a 14-3 spurt to close the half, with them leading 53-32. The Argos wouldn't get closer than 18 in the second half, and they went over five minutes without a basket at one point.

OUAZ shot 63.6 percent in the first half – including 6 of 11 from beyond the arc – to help them to 52.8 percent for the game. They outscored the Argos 54-30 in the paint while distributing 20 assists and committing just eight turnovers.

Kolten Hitt scored a career-high 22 points to lead the Spirit. He was 6 of 10 from beyond the arc with five straight makes during the two decisive runs. Hitt also led or tied for the team lead with four assists, two steals, and two blocked shots.

Defensively, the Spirit limited Providence to 38.8 percent shooting and 8 of 24 from three. They forced the Argos into 13 turnovers and converted them into 21 points.

Keshawn Bruner added 15 points, with Josiah De'laCerda and Jayce Catchings scoring 14 apiece. Devin Collins added 10 points and eight rebounds. The Spirit finished with 34 points off the bench.

Eric Milner and Sam Vining had 13 points each to lead the Argos.

OUAZ is now off for Christmas before returning to action on January 5 at Vanguard.
