OUAZ Returns from Break with Win over Redhawks

MESA, Ariz. – In its first action on 16 days, the OUAZ men's basketball team picked up a 73-62 win over Benedictine Mesa on Monday night at the Coyote Center to complete a season sweep of the Redhawks.

OUAZ (11-4) had four players score double figures as the Spirit shot 40.3 percent from the field. They overcame a 2 of 24 effort from beyond the arc by scoring 14 second-chance points from 13 offensive rebounds.

Devin Collins scored a career-high 18 points while grabbing 15 rebounds in the win. He was 6 of 12 shots and was 6 of 8 at the foul line.

Trailing 10-9 six minutes into the contest, OUAZ put together an 18-6 run that opened an 11-point lead with 7:34 to play before halftime. The Spirit never gave the lead back the rest of the night as Benedictine Mesa (3-10) couldn't get closer than four.

Jayce Catchings matched the 18 from Collins in 26 minutes off the bench. Kolten Hitt added 12 points, and Keshawn Bruner scored 10.

OUAZ tallied 15 assists with just 10 turnovers. They held the Redhawks to 42.2 percent shooting and finished with a 45-26 rebounding edge. The Spirit also got 15 points from the eight BenU turnovers.

Tre Carolina led BenU with 17 points.

OUAZ will now get ready to host Vanguard on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Faith Arena.
