Spirit Fall Just Short in Inaugural GSAC Championship Dual

After going up 2-0 in the inaugural GSAC Championship Dual, the OUAZ beach volleyball team was unable to win one more match as Vanguard rallied to win 3-2. The team's four-dual win streak, and 17-match win streak came to an end on Friday afternoon.

Brittany Western and Andrea Edwards grabbed the first victory for OUAZ with a straight sets win in the fours slot. They took control of most of the match, cruising to a 21-15, 21-14 victory.
Abbey Willison and Katia Dizon dropped a close first set in the twos match, but battled back to win the final two sets. The first two sets went the limit and more, finishing 19-21, 22-20, and winning the third set 15-11.

Vanguard quickly closed the gap, winning the three and five slots both in two sets. Noel Chavarria and Isabel Mason lost 8-21, 15-21, and Mia Lara/Claire Nenninger battled in a 19-21, 18-21 finish.

Viri Serrano and Katelyn Viray took the first set of the ones match, the last one to finish on Huntington Beach Friday. After going up 1-0 on a 21-14 set victory, they were on the wrong end of the same final in the second set. The third set saw the Spirit pair hang tough, but ultimately fall 15-11 in the championship set.

OUAZ will now await to hear about postseason play, and the most likely bid will be to the AVCA Small College Beach Championship. The Spirit would return to defend its 2019 National Championship, the last time the title was handed out as the tournament was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
