Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

90th Minute Dagger Leaves Spirit Just Short of Conference Crown

SURPRISE, ARIZ. - After tying the game in exhilarating fashion with just over 11 minutes left, the OUAZ men's soccer team experienced heartbreak when Westmont's Landon Amaral scored in the 90th minute to beat the Spirit 2-1. It is the second straight season the Spirit have made it to the GSAC Championship Game.

Westmont slowed the game down early, taking most of the possession for the first 20 minutes of the game, but both teams opened up as the contest inched closer to halftime. The Warriors were able to get on the board in the 39' as Wyatt Babineau converted a turnover just outside the OUAZ 18-yard box.

OUAZ had plenty of opportunities, especially in the second half. The Spirit took six shots in the second half, and put a lot of crosses into the Westmont box.

Mauricio Ochoa scored a lot of clutch goals for the Spirit this season, and he did it again in the 79'. With his team down, Ochoa made a move on the left side and fired a shot into the top right corner from about 20 yards out. It was his fourth goal of the season, and his second career postseason tally.

Friday marked the first time since February 24 that the Spirit let up more than one regulation goal. Coming into the game, the Spirit had allowed just four regulation scores against in the eight conference games.

The Spirit will now wait to see what its postseason fate is, as the teams for the NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship will be announced Monday morning at 10 a.m. PST. For more information on the men's soccer program, visit ouazspirit.com.
