Spirit in Must-Win Situation at The Master's

The OUAZ men's soccer team has hit a two-game slide that has put them behind in the GSAC East race with three games remaining. The first of those three final games is set for Wednesday, when the Spirit travel to Santa Clarita, Calif. for a matchup with The Master's.

Life Pacific has forfeited its remaining two games, meaning the Spirit now sit 1.5 games out of the division crown. OUAZ has to win its next two contests to set up a winner-take-all matchup against William Jessup at Spirit Field on April 1.

A loss to The Master's would put the Spirit out of an opportunity to participate in the GSAC conference game. OUAZ has not lost to the Mustangs since the 2018 season, and defeated them 3-1 at Spirit Field back on March 4.

Last week's game against Life Pacific marked the second straight contest OUAZ lost 1-0 in overtime, and was the team's third consecutive game that extended past regulation. The four overtime games this season is the most in a season in program history, and the Spirit have never played more than two OT contests prior to this year.

When the Spirit are scoring goals, they are set up by great plays before the ball crosses the goal line. The Spirit rank 34th in the NAIA in assists per game (2.0), and have two of the top five assist-recorders in the conference. Mauricio Ochoa is tied for second in the GSAC with four helpers, and Glademir Mendoza is tied for fifth with his three assists.

Samuel George currently sits fifth in the GSAC with 11 points. His five goals is the most on the team, and he has played 578 minutes, which is also a team-high.
