Spirit Head to Jessup to Close Regular Season

SPIRIT NOTES
•    Entering the final weekend of the regular season, the OUAZ men's basketball team looks to make a final push to the postseason with a pair of games at William Jessup in Rocklin, California.

•    The Spirit and Warriors will play at 5:30 p.m.(AZ) on Friday and then again at 2 p.m. (AZ) at Warrior Arena on the William Jessup University campus.

•    Fans are not allowed to attend the games due to WJU campus policies.

•    Both games of the series will be broadcast live on the OUAZ Digital Network with WJU producing the content. Fans can view the game online at OUAZSpirit.com/network or on the NAIA Network app on Android TV, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Roku devices.

•    Live stats will also be available during the games with a link will be available on the men's basketball schedule on the OUAZ website or at OUAZSpirit.com/live.

•    OUAZ enters the trip at 10-4 on the season and guaranteed its first winning regular season since the 2017-18 campaign. They have gone 2-1 in road games and 4-1 in all games played away from Faith Arena this season.

•    The Spirit are 5-3 in GSAC play and tied for third in the GSAC East entering the season's final weekend. They are tied with The Master's and one game behind William Jessup for second place.

•    The "Play Fast" offense of the Spirit has been in full effect this season. They have scored at least 80 points in a game seven times and they have gone for 90-plus five times. In scoring 81.36 points per game, OUAZ currently ranks 59th in the NAIA and third in the GSAC.

•    That high-scoring attack has been anchored by the efficient shooting of the team. The Spirit are shooting 49.6 percent from the field this season to rank 19th in the country. They have been at 50 percent or better eight times.

•    They shot 61.5 percent in the series opener against San Diego Christian on February 15. That is the second-best shooting performance in team history and marked the third time this season they made at least 57 percent in a game.

•    OUAZ has added the long ball into its repertoire this season, with eight games with at least 10 made 3-pointers. The team is averaging 9.36 makes from beyond the arc per game where they rank 47th in the country.

•    The team makes 37.9 percent from long range to rank second in the conference and 29th nationally. In contrast, the Spirit is No. 7 in the NAIA by holding its opposition to 28.6 percent from three.

•    Kam Malbrough leads the Spirit in scoring at 17.71 points per game to sit sixth in the GSAC. The two-time GSAC Player of the Week has scored in double figures in all but one of the 14 games played this season and he has gone for 20-plus three times.

•    Malbrough scored 36 points on 14 of 17 shooting in the win over San Diego Christian on February 15. In that game, he set the program record for made threes without a miss by going 6 for 6 from distance.

•    Along with his scoring, Malbrough is averaging 4.86 assists per game to rank fourth in the conference and 31st in the NAIA.

•    Josiah De'laCerda has played in eight games this season and averages 16.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. His eight double-digit scoring outings include three games with at least 20.

•    De'laCerda shot 65.2 percent in the San Diego Christian series to raise his season percentage to 58.5 percent. He also scored the game-winning jumper as time expired to beat San Diego Christian on February 16 and make the No. 3 play on the SportsCenter Top 10.

•    Kolten Hitt adds 11.5 points per game with nine double-digit scoring efforts. He is shooting 58.8 percent from the floor and 43.9 percent from beyond the arc.

•    Quentin Guliford scores 10.9 points per game and shoots 55.7 percent. His totals include a double-double of 25 points and 13 rebounds against Benedictine Mesa on January 13.

•    According to the poll of the league's coaches released on October 17, OUAZ was projected to finish eighth in the league this season. The team received 26 points from the coaches 

•    The 2021 conference schedule will feature two separate pods. There will be no crossover games scheduled by the conference. Representing Pod A will be Hope International, Vanguard, and Westmont. Pod B will feature Arizona Christian, Life Pacific, OUAZ, San Diego Christian, The Master's, and William Jessup. Menlo has decided to opt-out of the men's basketball competition this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

•    There will be no GSAC Basketball Tournament conducted in 2021. The conference's two automatic berths will be represented by the two pod champions which is Arizona Christian and Vanguard.

•    The 2020-21 NAIA basketball season marks a return to one division for the first time since the end of 1990-91. That also changes the NAIA National Championship from a 32-team field to a 64-team field, although the 2021 tournament will feature 48 teams.

•    With the change, 16 schools will host a three-team Opening Round bracket with those winners advancing to the final site at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.

•    The Championship Selection Show for the 48-team field for this season's tournament will be broadcast by the NAIA at 6 p.m. (AZ) on Thursday, March 4.
