Swimming Shows Progress at GCU Invite

PHOENIX – In its final meet of 2021, the OUAZ men's & women's swimming team continued to show improvement with multiple season-best times. In the meet, the teams faced Grand Canyon and Arizona Christian.

The OUAZ men dropped the decision against both opponents, losing to GCU 217-36 and ACU 113-75. The women's results saw GCU win 245-20, and ACU earn a 134-34 victory.

OUAZ recorded seven season-best marks in the men's event, with Blake Francis setting two of those times. He began by posting a time of 1:06.92 in the 100 Breaststroke and then went 5:21.25 in the 500 Freestyle.

Ayden Dusek also set a pair of season marks, including his 1:59.36 in the 200 Backstroke. He also posted a time of 54.61 in the 100 Butterfly. Jonathon Cowin completed the 200 Freestyle in 1:55.36.

OUAZ also put two top times in relay races. In the 200 Medley Relay, Cowin, Vladimir Fedoseev, Dusek, and Konnor Kolberg posted a time of 1:39.83. Then, Dusek, Cowin, Kolberg, and Francis set the top time in the 400 Freestyle Relay by finishing in 3:25.18.

The Spirit women also added six season-best times, with Gwyneth Arthur setting two of those marks. Arthur finished the 100 Freestyle in 57.49 and the 200 Freestyle in 2:08.34.

Kayden Brendel also set a pair of top times in the two Butterfly races. In the 100 Butterfly, Brendel posted a time of 1:01.65. She also set a mark of 2:17.65 in the 200 Butterfly.

Lindsey Dwinell posted a time of 26.75 seconds in the 50 Freestyle to establish a new season-best in that event.

The OUAZ 400 Freestyle Relay team of Jasmine Donnelly, Isabella Gomez, Dwinell, and Arthur set the season's top time in the event at 4:05.71.

The Spirit will be back in action on January 8 when they head to the New Mexico State meet in Las Cruces, N.M.
