OUAZ Sinks Buccaneers

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Four players scored in double figures as the OUAZ men's basketball team ran away from Park Gilbert on Tuesday night and picked up a 93-56 win at Faith Arena.

Trailing 8-2 just over two minutes into the game, OUAZ (2-0) outscored Park Gilbert (1-5) 48-13 over the next 18 minutes, and they took a 50-24 lead into the halftime break. The Spirit would keep the advantage above 20 the rest of the night, and an 11-0 run down the stretch carried the margin to its largest of the game at 39.

OUAZ shot 54.0 percent from the floor with 52 points in the paint and 23 fast break points. They hit 8 of 26 from beyond the arc and added 25 points from 18 Buccaneers' turnovers. The Spirit finished with a 46-33 rebounding edge while dishing out 19 assists.

Jayce Catchings led the group in double figures with 20 points on 7 of 10 shooting. He also hit three from deep and grabbed five rebounds in just 17 minutes off the bench. Josiah De'laCerda added 19 points and ten rebounds for his first double-double of the season.

The Spirit also got 13 points and five assists from Kam Malbrough, while Kolten Hitt scored ten points with four assists and two steals.

Park Gilbert was held to 35.3 percent shooting, and they went 4 of 16 from distance. The Buccaneers did convert 11 offensive rebounds into 10 points. DJ McNeal led the Bucs with 12 points.

OUAZ now heads to Denver, where they will plan an exhibition at Denver University on Friday at 6 p.m.
