Magical Run Ends in Double Overtime of NAIA National Championship

DECATUR, Ala. – The magical run to the final site of the NAIA National Championship for OUAZ men's soccer came to a heartbreaking end on Tuesday as the Spirit dropped a 4-3 decision to MidAmerica Nazarene in double overtime.

OUAZ (13-5-1) was playing in the National Championship for the first time in program history and reached the final site after a pair of upset wins during the Miami Gardens Opening Round.

On Tuesday, the Spirit looked to be in good shape as they raced out to a 2-0 advantage behind goals from Mark Lydford and Tinashe Simbo. The two goals came in the 19th and 22nd minutes to give the team a multiple-goal advantage for the ninth time this season.

MidAmerica Nazarene (14-6-1) got some momentum back in the 32nd minute when Rick Hovinga scored that eventually pushed the game to halftime, with OUAZ leading 2-1. The Pioneers found an equalizer in the 57th minute with a goal from Duarte Chapelas.

With its lead gone, the Spirit again turned up the pressure and drew a penalty kick in the 69th minute. Joaquin Bermejillo converted that chance, and once again, the Spirit had a lead.

MNU would level that match a second time when Nicholas Richmond found a loose ball in the box and tapped it into the goal in the 84th minute. The game would then continue into sudden victory overtime, where in the second of the ten-minute periods, Chapelas ended up free on a set piece and put a shot away to end the Spirit's season.

The result snapped a span of 14 games dating back to the 2019 season that OUAZ had lost a game during which they led 2-0.

OUAZ held a 25-20 edge in shots during the game – including a 16-11 edge after halftime – with the Spirit putting 11 of those chances on goal. The Spirit was called for 24 fouls and played the final six minutes with 10 men after a red card on a last defender challenge.

Tom Cohen took nine of the Spirit's shots with none of them on goal. Simbo took three shots with four others attempting two shots apiece.

Angel Ramirez suffered the loss in goal for the Spirit with six saves.
