The OUAZ beach volleyball team headed to Southern California this past week after a 5-1 start to the season that saw the Spirit take down three NCAA Division I teams. The Spirit continued its momentum, as they extended its dual win streak to six with wins over Westcliff, The Master's and Vanguard in a three-day stretch.
Thursday - OUAZ 4, Westcliff 1
The matchup against Westcliff was one more non-conference tune-up before OUAZ hit Golden State Athletic Conference play the next day. The Spirit arrived focused, and clinched the dual in the first three matches.
Mariah Clausen and
Isabel Mason started the dual off with a 21-15, 21-13 victory over Westcliff's Sydney Hill and Leah Price.
Katelyn Viray and
Ashleigh Atsaros followed that up with a solid 21-16, 21-10 performance before
Andrea Gonzalez and
Viri Serrano clinched the match, 21-17, 21-13.
Friday - OUAZ 5, The Master's 0
OUAZ cruised to a sweep victory over the Mustangs on Friday to open conference play 1-0. The Spirit pairs lost only one combined set, as Viray and Atsaros lost the first set 21-18, but bounced back with a 21-19, 16-14 performance in the final two sets to grab the second point for the Spirit.
Val Rodgers and
Mikelle Taylor clinched the match for the second time this season, as they defeated Kate Emmerling and Desi Elizondo 21-13, 21-15. Rodgers and Taylor have been the deciding match three different times this season, going 2-1 in the situation.
Saturday - OUAZ 3, Vanguard 2
The Spirit had a battle on its hands on the final day of the trip, as Vanguard competed hard all afternoon long. Viray/Atsaros started the day off with a convincing 21-16, 21-12 win, and Clausen/Mason followed that up with a two-set win, 23-21, 21-16.
Gonzalez and Serrano had the chance to clinch the dual in just the third match, but lost in three sets, 21-16, 21-19, 15-12.
Katia Dizon and Abbey Willison picked up their teammates by clinching the dual 21-15, 21-11 for the Spirit's sixth straight dual win.
The Spirit come back to Arizona and will host its first home duals of the season as they continue GSAC play. They will take on two ACUs on Thursday, March 5th – Abilene Christian and Arizona Christian – before wrapping up the homestand against Marymount California the next day. All matches will be held at Victory Lane Sports Park in Glendale.
