Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Vanguard Overpowers Spirit

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Looking to help their chances of making the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament, the OUAZ men's basketball team found little answers for Vanguard in an 88-66 loss at Faith Arena on Saturday afternoon.

OUAZ (8-14, 4-9 GSAC) never led in the loss as Vanguard (12-12, 5-7) seemed determined to breakout of their recent slump in which they had dropped six of seven coming in. After falling behind 20-10 early, the Spirit fought back to get within 22-21 before the Lions took charge with 17 straight points over a three-minute, 56 seconds span.

The Spirit shot just 39.7 percent from the field and they were 4 of 17 from beyond the arc. They also committed 17 turnovers. OUAZ held Vanguard to 44.9 percent overall and 7 of 25 from three, but the Lions had a 48-35 edge in rebounds and they scored 14 points from 15 offensive boards.

Brian Carey led OUAZ with 21 points while Dimetres Moore added 17 and three steals. Elijah Simmons finished with 10 points and six rebounds.

Aziz Seck led four Lions in double figures with 21 points.

Now two losses out of the final spot in the conference tournament with five games to play, OUAZ gets set to host Park Gilbert on Monday in Faith Arena at 7 p.m.
