SURPRISE, Ariz. – On a day they celebrated their senior class, the OUAZ men's basketball team saw those seniors lead them to a 97-86 win over William Jessup in the final game of the season on Saturday afternoon at Faith Arena.
With the win, OUAZ ends its season with consecutive wins and with an 11-17 overall record. They finished 6-12 in GSAC play to finish tied for seventh.
It wasn't looking good for the Spirit on Saturday as they struggled early and trailed 40-25 with 2:07 to play before halftime. They turned things around over the next 12 minutes, 24 seconds by outscoring William Jessup (18-12, 10-8 GSAC) 45-15 by making 17 of 21 shots and forcing the Warriors into 10 turnovers.
That run sparked a 66-point second half for the Spirit that saw them shoot 67.7 percent. The turnaround led to the team shooting 55.6 percent for the game. OUAZ scored 50 points in the paint with 22 fast break points. They also turned the 17 WJU turnovers into 26 points.
Dimetres Moore brought his career to a close with a game-high 37 points on 13 of 18 shooting. It was his sixth 30-point scoring effort of the season – and second straight – to secure his claim as the GSAC's leading scorer this season.
Fellow seniors
Brian Carey and
Shazier Lawson finished with 21 points apiece in their final games. Lawson grabbed 12 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the year. Carey locked up the GSAC assist crown with eight on Saturday.
The 26-point turnaround from 15 points down to an 11-point win comes two days after they rallied from down 12 to win by 13 against Menlo.
