First Half Struggle Hurts Spirit at No. 4 Westmont

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – A six-minute stretch in the first half was all No. 4 Westmont needed to take control of OUAZ and prevent the Spirit from pulling off a second straight upset of a top-10 opponent with a 96-74 win on Saturday evening at Murchison Gymnasium.

It was a 23-6 run in which Westmont (21-2, 10-1 GSAC) forced OUAZ (7-13, 3-8) into five turnovers and just 2 of 7 shooting that turned the Warrior's 7-5 lead into an 18-point cushion. The lead remained in double figures the rest of the night.

OUAZ played the GSAC leaders basically even in the second half as they shot 60.7 percent in the half to end the game at 50.9 overall. The Spirit made 9 of 19 from beyond the arc and had 17 assists with 14 turnovers.

Westmont hurt the Spirit with its 44-25 rebounding edge that included 17 offensive rebounds – compared to two from OUAZ – for an 18-0 tally in second chance points. The Warriors also scored 17 points from the OUAZ turnovers compared to just six OUAZ points from the 14 Westmont turns.

Dimetres Moore had his sixth 20-point outing of the season with 22 points to lead the Spirit. He was 9 of 11 from the field while making three of his four attempts from beyond the arc. Karriem Simmons had 14 points off the bench and Brian Carey added 12 points and eight assists.

Abram Carrasco led four Warriors in double figures with 23 points.

The Spirit now return home for the next four games at Faith Arena. That begins on Thursday when they look for a season sweep of San Diego Christian at 7 p.m.
