SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ men's basketball team got a record performance from
Marcus Williams in their season finale, but it wouldn't be enough as No. 23 Arizona Christian held off the Spirit 98-96 at Willow Canyon High School.
The loss ends the Spirit's second season with a 4-24 overall record and a 1-17 mark in their first year playing in the Golden State Athletic Conference.
Williams scored a school record 39 points in defeat on a night he tied the school record with eight made 3-pointers on 11 attempts. He hit 12 of 19 from the field overall and added 7 of 11 at the foul line. Williams had 32 points in the second half.
OUAZ shot 50.7 percent as a team with 38 points in the paint. They were hurt by their 12 of 27 at the foul line and the 49-43 rebounding advantage for Arizona Christian (23-7, 11-7 GSAC).
The game changed with 1:20 to play in the second half when OUAZ had three technical fouls called against them. ACU would hit four of the six free throws and grow their lead from four to eight.
Brian King Jr. added 15 points and four assists for the Spirit.
Dimetres Moore scored 14 points and
Tanner Riley closed out his career with 10 points.
Brian Roberts grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds.
The Firestorm shot 41.4 percent and hit 29 of 41 at the foul line. Callum Lawson led the team with 23 points and 17 rebounds.
