PHOENIX – The OUAZ men's tennis team recorded the program's first-ever Golden State Athletic Conference win with an 8-1 win over No. 25 San Diego Christian on Friday. The Spirit then came back and defeated Lewis-Clark State 5-0 to end the day.
OUAZ (2-2, 1-0 GSAC) got off to a quick start in doubles play against San Diego Christian by winning all three points.
Eduardo Couto and
Leonardo Couto took the No. 1 match 8-3 with
Austin Todd and
Jordan Petrie winning the No. 2 match 8-2. The Spirit then earned the third point in a walkover.
In singles action,
Noel Maurin upset No. 29 Innocent Tidimane 6-4, 6-0 in the No. 3 match. The Spirit picked up three wins in a tiebreak as L.Couto (10-8),
Dong Hyun Kim (10-4), and
Austin Todd (10-4) came out victorious. The eighth point came via walkover. E.Couto fell to No. 13 Alonso Tellez 6-7, 1-6.
The Spirit again used a sweep of doubles to set the tone against Lewis-Clark State. Needing just two points in singles to secure a victory, L.Couto and Maurin won their matches to clinch a victory. Once the win was secured all remaining matches were halted.
OUAZ will look to pick up another GSAC win on Saturday when they host No. 23 Hope International in a 1 p.m. match at the Paseo Racquet Center.
