Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

OUAZ Defeated in GSAC Final via Penalties

The OUAZ men's soccer team had played a fantastic 180 minutes of soccer in the GSAC Tournament entering the final on Friday. It was a stretch that saw them score six goals, and pick up two wins, including the biggest win in program history over fourth-ranked Westmont. That is why it does not feel fitting that OUAZ's trip to the final ended in penalties.

Menlo's Luke Gleadle converted the title-clinching penalty after OUAZ's Jordan Riley missed the attempt prior, and the Oaks took home its second GSAC tournament championship in four years. The win also guarantees Menlo a spot in the NAIA National Championship tournament.

OUAZ trailed 1-0 at halftime thanks to a goal from Menlo's Tim Staerz, but OUAZ played an excellent second half. They did not allow a shot on target, and got the equalizer from Cristian Gennaro in the 53'. They had two more bids on goal before the end of regulation, but they were denied.

The first overtime did not treat the Spirt well, as Menlo had five shot attempts while OUAZ did not register any. Despite the increased pressure, the Oaks did not one of those five shots on target. Each team had one shot on target in the second overtime. OUAZ's Yuri Nascimento made four saves on the day.

Riley was the only player from either team to miss a penalty attempt. Ricardo Navarro, Hazem Sobhy, Gennaro and Kyle McDowell converted their attempts.

The Spirit now awaits its postseason fate. They have qualified for the NCCAA nationals, but are eligible for an at-large bid into the NAIA National Championship tournament. OUAZ will find out Monday morning if they did receive a bid to NAIA nationals.
