SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ men's basketball team had three players score in double figures in an 88-82 loss to Menlo on Thursday night in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at Paradise Honors High School.
OUAZ (3-13, 1-6 GSAC) never led in the game and they were chasing Menlo (6-10, 2-5) all night after the Oaks went on a 10-2 run early in the first half. After falling behind by 14 in the first half, the Spirit would trim the deficit to 58-54 with 12:32 remaining before Menlo countered with a 16-3 run to put the game out of reach.
The Spirit shot 39.3 percent from the field and made 10 of their 20 attempts from beyond the arc. They forced Menlo into 19 turnovers which resulted in 24 points for the Spirit with 12 fast break points.
Marcus Williams led OUAZ with a career-high 28 points that featured six 3-pointers on 10 attempts. He was 8 of 14 overall with three assists and two steals.
OUAZ also got 19 points apiece from
Tanner Riley and
Dimetres Moore with each hitting one three. Moore tied
Leandro Amador for the team lead with six rebounds and Riley had two steals.
Menlo shot 46.7 percent with 36 points in the paint. John Paine and Charles Neal led the Oaks with 18 points each.
The Spirit will return to the court on Saturday when they host No. 24 William Jessup at 2 p.m. at Willow Canyon High School.
