SURPRISE, Ariz. – After waiting nearly two hours to start their game because of weather in the area, the OUAZ men's soccer team was able to respond to twice allowing a tying goal to secure a 3-2 win over the University of the Southwest on Thursday night in double overtime at Spirit Field.
The game started just minutes before 10 p.m., but OUAZ (2-0) got off to a fast start when
Mauricio Ochoa carried the ball into the penalty area and put a shot away for a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute of action.
That lead would hold until the 54th minute when Southwest (0-1) turned a counter attack into a game-tying goal that appeared to give the visitors from New Mexico a little life. After trying the game, Southwest attempted the game's next four shots and seemed to have momentum.
OUAZ had an answer in the 74th minute when
Jacob Garcia won possession in the midfield and played a ball ahead to
Bryan Hernandez. That setup a ball to the left of the penalty area where
Samuel George would finish to the far post to give the Spirit a 2-1 lead.
Just when it seemed OUAX had settled in and had the game secured, USA found another counter attack that led to an OUAZ foul in the penalty area. Adam Foltz converted the penalty kick and with just over two minutes remaining the game was once again level.
After neither team created opportunities during the first 10-minute overtime period, OUAZ found a ate spark just after midnight when
Serigne Amar Ndao and
Ricardo Navarro combined to setup
Giovanni Ruelas for a golden goal in the 103rd minute.
The game was just the second overtime game in school history and the win extended the Spirit's streak of consecutive wins when leading after 75 minutes to 10 straight.
The Spirit finished the night with 18 shots and eight on goal while allowing Southwest to take 10 shots with seven on frame.
George led OUAZ with four shots while Ochoa and Ruelas had three shots each.
Andrew Tamburra earned the win in goal with five saves.
The Spirit will be back in action on Friday when they return to Spirit Field to host Antelope Valley. First touch is at 8 p.m. and it follows the women's game between the same two schools at 5:30 p.m.
