Spirit Fend Off Feisty Westcliff Squad

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ men's basketball team picked up a home win on Friday night as they had five players score in double figures for a 93-86 win at Willow Canyon High School.
 
OUAZ (2-6) led for most of the night but found themselves tied ay 69-69 with 8:27 to play in the second half. Westcliff (1-12) had used a 10-1 run to pull even for the first time in the second half.
 
Over the next four minutes, 10 seconds, OUAZ would outscore the Warriors 14-3 and forced the visitors to just 1 of 9 from the floor with three turnovers. Dimetres Moore and Tanner Riley scored 12 of the Spirit's points in the decisive stretch.
 
Riley ended the night with a game-high 19 points while adding 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. He scored 10 of those points in the second half. Riley also distributed five assists and took five steals.
 
OUAZ shot 42.9 percent from the floor and hit a season high 10 threes on 32 attempts. They got 15 points from 18 offensive rebounds and had a 50-37 edge in total rebounds. The Spirit assisted on 17 of 30 made baskets and forced 19 turnovers with nine steals.
 
Moore, Marcus Williams, and Chandler Solis each scored 17 points for the Spirit. Williams finished with a school record eight assists while hitting three triples. Solis also had three made 3-pointers. Moore grabbed seven rebounds to compliment his 7 of 10 shooting. Brian King Jr. added 11 points in the win.
 
Westcliff ended the game shooting 42.6 percent from the field and by hitting 11 of 27 from beyond the arc. They scored 34 points in the paint and got 11 points from 22 OUAZ turnovers.
 
Richard Serrano led the Warriors with 18 points.
 
OUAZ will be back in action next Friday at noon when they open play at the Cactus Classic against Rocky Mountain College. The classic is being played across the valley at Chandler-Gilbert Community College.
