ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Ottawa University Arizona men's soccer team fell on Saturday evening to the Flames from Bethesda University of California by a final of 1-0.
With the loss, the Spirit fall to 5-6 overall. With the victory Saturday, Bethesda University of California improves to 12-2-1 overall on the season.
"We played against a very good and experienced team tonight," said OUAZ head men's soccer coach Matt Gow. "There is a reason why they have the record and wins that they do. However, I am extremely proud of our guys tonight and their execution of our game plan."
It was a defensive battle on Saturday, as both teams were held scoreless in the first 45 minutes of play. Bethesda's offense would respond early on in the second half. In the 55th minute, Eduardo Faria found Diogo Pereira for the game's lone goal. OUAZ would try and answer, but were held in check and fell to Bethesda University of California by a final of 1-0.
In the loss, the Spirit were outshot by the Flames 16-7. Bethesda University attempted four corner kicks on the evening, while OUAZ had just one.
Spirit goaltender Antony Siaha (SO/Yaounde, Cameroon) played all 90 minutes, while recording seven saves on nine shots faced.
Gow continued, "This one stings a bit, but it honestly could have gone either way tonight. I look forward to us taking this experience and growth into our first home game of the year this Thursday."
Following 11 straight road matches to open up the regular season, the Spirit will finally come home this Thursday October 12th for their first home match of the season. Both the OUAZ men's and women's soccer teams will host Arizona Christian University. The women will get things started at 5:30pm, followed by the men at 7:30pm.
