LA VERNE, Calif. - The Ottawa University Arizona Spirit men's soccer team recorded their second straight shutout victory on Monday evening, by defeating the University of La Verne by a final of 4-0 in La Verne, California.
With the victory, the Spirit improve to 7-6 overall on the year. With the loss, the University of La Verne Leopards fall to 6-6-2 overall.
"This was a good road win tonight," said OUAZ head men's soccer coach Matt Gow. "La Verne was very organized in their approach to the game, however our guys adjusted well in the second half, as we continued to implement our game model."
Gow continued, "Having our four guys get a goal and three others with an assist on the backline; not to mention our two goalkeepers recording the shutout tonight, is a prime example of our full team performance again tonight."
Following their 3-0 shutout win against Arizona Christian University last Thursday, OUAZ responded Monday with a 4-0 road shutout victory at NCAA Division III University of La Verne (CA). The Spirit got on the board early, as Ricardo Navarro (FR/Inglewood, CA) found the back of the net in the 14th minute off a set piece, to put the Spirit ahead at 1-0. That lead would hold as the teams went into halftime.
In the second half, OUAZ wasted no time as they struck for the game's second goal in the 46th minute. David Lopez (FR/Manteca, CA) found Andric McGill (FR/McPherson, KS) to give the Spirit a 2-0 lead.
In the 62nd minute, Samuel George (FR/Sittingbourne, England) and Omar Centeno (SO/Los Angeles, CA) set-up Jacob Garcia (FR/Las Vegas, NV) for the third goal of the match for the Spirit. His goal extended OUAZ's lead to 3-0.
Samuel George closed out the scoring in the 85th minute, when Bryan Hernandez (FR/Phoenix, AZ) set him up for the fourth goal on the evening for OUAZ. The Spirit ran out the remaining time and claimed the 4-0 road victory to bump OUAZ over the .500 mark on the season.
In the victory, newly named NCCAA Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week Antony Siaha (SO/Yaounde, Cameroon) and back-up keeper Kaden Jobe (FR/Wichita, KS) combined on the shutout win. The Spirit stopped all 10 shots that they faced.
OUAZ was outshot 17-7 in the victory, while La Verne attempted two corner-kicks to OUAZ's one.
The OUAZ men return home this Saturday October 21st to host Bethesda University of California at 5:30pm. The OUAZ women will follow at 7:30pm with a match against Shepherd University.
